Our February Project

February 03, 2014

In February our business gets a little boost from all of the pajamas, nightgowns, and robes ordered as Valentine's Day gifts, so it is a perfect month to donate a portion of all sales to a worthwhile cause. This month 10% of total sales will go to the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital in Ethiopia.

The Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital, founded by Drs. Reginald and Catherine Hamlin, provides care for women with childbirth injuries and has done so since 1974. It is located in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia. It is the only hospital of its kind in the world dedicated exclusively to women with obstetric fistula – a condition common in the developing world where the maternal health care is limited. It treats all patients completely free of charge, and is funded entirely by donations.

Eradicated in the "developed" world at the end of the 19th century when caesarean section became widely available, obstetric fistula continues to plague women throughout the developing world. It is estimated that there are 100,000 new fistula cases each year, but the capacity to treat fistula is only around 6,500 per year. The United Nations Population fund (UNFPA) estimates the world's population of fistula sufferers at more than two million. Our donation at the end of the month will go to Hamlin Fistula USA. They do not breakdown the cost of each operation on donation portion of their site, but similar hospitals in Africa site a cost of $350 to $400 for an operation. We should be able to donate several operations this month, so thank you in advance for every Women's Portuguese Flannel Pajama set, Liberty of London Pajama Set, and Cashmere Robe you purchase this month. They should help you stay warm and cozy, and together we will make someone else a little more comfortable too!
