Why is the cotton fabric for your pajamas so soft?

Our fabrics are extraordinarily soft for a few reasons. The first reason is the premium quality cotton fibers that are used to weave the fabric. Cotton fibers vary in length, and threads made from longer fibers result in fabric that has a softer, silkier feel.

The second important reason that our fabrics are so soft is because of the processes used to improve the quality of the cotton fibers.  Cotton is a natural fiber, so after it is harvested it should be combed and carded in order to remove impurities. Carding cotton fibers cleans them by separating them and laying them parallel to one another. Carding removes short fibers, which allows the remaining longer fibers to be woven into very fine yarns for high quality fabrics.

Why are your pajamas so expensive?

Elizabeth Cotton is one of the most expensive lines of cotton sleepwear because we use only the finest fabrics to make our products. “The finest fabrics” also happen to be some of “The most expensive fabrics” because of what they are made of, and how they are made. As mentioned above, high quality cotton fabric is woven from long fibers (approx. 1 ½” to 2” long). Less then 10% of the world’s cotton crop is comprised of long staple cotton, which makes it rare and more expensive than shorter fiber cotton.

Another reason our fabrics are so luxurious is because they come from some of the most reputable fabric mills in the world. Both mills have been in business for over a hundred years, so they are extremely knowledgeable and experienced in weaving fine yarns into fabric. Continuously inspecting fibers and finished fabrics to ensure that their products are of the highest quality requires time and individuals devoted to the job.

We also proudly manufacture our products in the United States.  It is slightly more expensive to manufacture merchandise here, but for our products the cost of the fabric far outweighs the cost of labor, so if we were to switch to offshore production our prices would be a bit lower, but the difference is not considerable. Manufacturing in the United States also allows us to maintain close relationships with factories and be present while our collection is made, which we feel is a very important factor in ensuring the quality of our merchandise.

 What does Thread Count mean?

Thread count refers to the number of yarns woven into a square inch of fabric.  Adding the lengthwise threads found in one inch of fabric (called warp threads) to the widthwise threads (called weft threads) gives you the thread count of the fabric.

Our Signature Sateen solid fabric has a 280 Thread Count, and our printed fabrics have a 240 Thread Count.

Is Thread Count the best indication of a fabric’s quality?

Thread Count is not the best indication of a fabric’s quality, the most important factor is the quality of the fibers used to weave the fabric.
Advertising and marketing for linens and sleepwear are unregulated, so there is also no guarantee that information on product packaging is accurate.  Searching online for high thread count items will result in an array items promoted as 600 to 1000 Thread Count, most for a fairly low price. Be very skeptical of these products as there are only so many threads that anyone can fit into a square inch of fabric. If some of the finest bedding brands have items all with less than a 300 Thread Count, there is a very low chance that someone advertising a higher thread count for a lower price is being entirely truthful about their product!

How are your pajamas sized and how should I know what size to buy my friend, wife, etc. as a gift?

Our pajamas are available in sizes XS (0/2), S (4/6), M (8/10), L (12/14), and XL (16).  Sizes are designed to correlate to what dress size you wear. If you are unsure of your exact size and wavering between two different sizes, we recommend that you go with the larger size as pajamas are always comfortable if they are a bit roomy.

If you are buying pajamas as a gift for your wife or friend, and are unsure as to which size is best, check a few other items of their clothing to get a good idea as to what size they are. Many husbands err on the side of caution when buying a gift for and get a size smaller than they should, worried that their loved ones will be insulted that they didn’t think that they were “small”. Please keep in mind that most women are not a size small, and that if a gift is the wrong size the recipient will have to go to through the trouble of exchanging the item before she can enjoy it!

May I purchase a different size top and bottom?

Our pajamas are manufactured and sold as sets and we regret that we are unable to sell different sized tops and bottoms. If you think that you are a size medium on the bottom and a large on the top (or vice versa), please select the larger size for the best fit.

How should I care for my pajamas?

We recommend washing your pajamas with like colors in cold water on a gentle cycle with a mild detergent (no bleach). Tumble dry low and remove from the dryer promptly to prevent wrinkling.   Fabric softener is great for keeping your pajamas extra comfortable.  Some of our favorite fabric detergents and softeners come from The Laundress, www.thelaundress.com.
